We are looking for a Data Science intern to ideally work for the fall 2025 and spring 2026 semesters to support an innovative project focused on building a Sports Data Ecosystem. This paid internship.
Project Overview
We aim to unify disconnected data sources (e.g., stats, wearables, recruiting, NIL, social media) into a scalable data model that supports real-world use cases such as:
· Talent evaluation
· Injury risk forecasting
· NIL (Name, Image & Likeness) strategy
· Sponsorship targeting
· Sports betting analytics
You will work with a cross-functional team to help structure, clean, merge, and analyze these data sources.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify, access, and assess relevant sports data sources for consistency, quality, and value.
- Normalize and integrate data into a unified schema for longitudinal athlete tracking.
- Build Python-based pipelines for data ingestion, cleaning, transformation, and validation.
- Support the development of predictive models (e.g., talent forecasting, NIL potential).
- Document data architecture, assumptions, and transformation steps.
- Collaborate to ensure privacy and governance compliance, especially for youth data.
- Assist in testing real-world use cases and delivering insights to stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an accredited university in the state of Virginia. Please do not apply if you do not meet this requirement.
- Pursuing a degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or related field.
- Strong proficiency in Python (especially Pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, and APIs).
- Experience with data wrangling and exploratory data analysis (EDA).
- Familiarity with youth sports data or interest in sports analytics a plus.
- Experience with databases (SQL or NoSQL), data privacy best practices, or cloud tools (e.g., Databricks, AWS, Azure) is a bonus.
- Excellent documentation, teamwork, and communication skills.
