A Day in the Life of the AI Engineer
In this role, you’ll design and ship AI-powered agents, workflows, and retrieval systems that power mission-critical government platforms. You’ll collaborate closely with Product, Platform, Data, and Security teams to take AI initiatives from idea to secure, scalable production systems. Your work will directly support state programs like SNAP, WIC, and Medicaid, helping millions of users access essential services more efficiently.
Responsibilities include:
- Designing and building AI agents for internal, customer-facing, and partner-facing workflows
- Developing agentic pipelines with orchestration, memory, tool usage, and governance
- Implementing multi-agent systems with clear coordination and handoff patterns
- Creating and optimizing retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines
- Building document ingestion, embedding, indexing, and retrieval workflows
- Optimizing AI systems for relevance, latency, cost, and reliability
- Integrating with LLM providers and AI platforms
- Supporting prompt engineering, model evaluation, and output quality measurement
- Ensuring AI workflows are observable, debuggable, and production-ready
- Designing AI systems with security, privacy, and compliance in mind (PII/PHI, SOC 2, HIPAA, FedRAMP readiness)
- Partnering with Product and Engineering leaders to define and execute the AI roadmap
- Helping turn AI proofs of concept into scalable, measurable production solutions
- Evangelizing AI best practices across engineering teams
Requirements and Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience building production software systems
- Hands-on experience with LLMs, prompt engineering, AI agents, and RAG architectures
- Strong Python skills and experience integrating AI into backend services
- Experience with agent orchestration tools such as LangGraph, Temporal, n8n, or similar
- Experience designing AI workflows that are observable, reliable, and secure
- Previous experience working in a startup or high-growth company
- Strong communication skills and a bias toward execution
- Ability to thrive in fast-paced, evolving environments
