This position is needed to lead the strategy, execution, and organizational excellence for multiple engineering teams or a critical domain area at Twilio.
As Director, Software Engineering, you'll operate at both strategic and operational levels, owning multi-quarter outcomes, shaping roadmap direction, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, scalable, reliable systems aligned to Twilio's business priorities. You'll drive engineering excellence and establish strong operating mechanisms across complex, interdependent teams.
Responsibilities
In this role, you’ll:
- Define and drive the engineering strategy and roadmap for your area, ensuring alignment with business objectives
- Partner closely with product, architecture, and executive leadership to co-create strategy and translate it into actionable execution plans
- Build, inspire, and scale high-performing teams; foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Establish robust operational mechanisms for predictable, high-quality delivery across complex, distributed systems
- Make investment trade-offs, prioritize resources, and ensure technical health and system reliability for the long term
- Mentor engineering leaders, cultivate talent, and champion diversity and inclusion across the organization

*Required:
- 15+ years of experience in software engineering, with a minimum of 5 years in senior engineering leadership roles (Director or above)
- Deep expertise in software development life cycle, system design, distributed systems, and system reliability
- Demonstrated ability to lead strategy and execution for large-scale, complex engineering organizations
- Proven success building and scaling high-performing teams and establishing strong operational mechanisms
- Strong technical judgement and capability to make portfolio-level trade-offs and prioritize investments
- Excellent communication skills, influencing ability, and partnership with cross-functional stakeholders, including executive leadership
- Track record of driving engineering excellence and championing best practices in system design, development, and operations
Desired:
- Experience in high-growth technology companies, cloud platforms, or SaaS environments
- Background in architecting large-scale, distributed systems and high-reliability platforms
- Experience working with geographically distributed teams and managing through periods of significant scale or transformation
- Technical or advanced degree in computer science, engineering, or related field
- Familiarity with Agile or Lean methodologies in product development
- Proven experience managing organizational change and building culture
- Success in navigating ambiguity and delivering impactful results in dynamic environments
- Industry certifications or continued education in engineering management or leadership
Location
This role will be remote, and based in India (only in Karnataka, TamilNadu, Telangana, Maharashtra and Delhi)
Travel
