The Role
As a Staff Safety Analytics & Metrics Engineer, you will lead the definition, analysis, and communication of quantitative safety metrics that track safety performance across the robot lifecycle. This role is central to 1X’s mission to build credible, evidence-backed safety narratives that inform internal decision-making and external transparency. You will analyze validation results, simulations, and field data to inform deployment readiness while shaping public-facing safety reports rooted in real-world performance. You will report to the Director of Robot Safety.
You Will
Define and maintain safety KPIs and metrics aligned with real-world hazards and risk exposure
Analyze data from simulation, validation, and field operations to assess safety performance
Identify regressions and emerging risks due to software or hardware changes
Collaborate cross-functionally with Functional Safety, V&V, and Safety Assurance to ensure metrics support safety cases and deployment decisions
Clearly communicate uncertainty, assumptions, and data limitations
Support executive decision-making through concise, data-driven safety insights
Must Have
M.S. or higher in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or related field
10+ years of experience in safety analytics, system performance, or reliability engineering for safety-critical products (robotics, autonomous vehicles, medical devices, aerospace, or industrial automation)
Expertise defining and implementing metrics for complex, real-world systems
Proficiency in Python and SQL to analyze large-scale fleet data and build statistically sound metrics
Proven ability to reason about risk, uncertainty, and confidence levels
Strong quantitative and statistical reasoning skills
Excellent technical writing skills for both internal audiences and public-facing safety communication
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated analysis of safety performance in autonomous or learning-enabled systems
Application of statistical methods to model low-frequency, high-severity events in safety-critical systems
Experience supporting external reviews, audits, or regulatory scrutiny with quantitative safety evidence
