The Opportunity at Komodo Health:
Komodo Health is transforming healthcare by building the leading healthcare analytics platform. Our AI team, Labs@Komodo, is pioneering this transformation by delivering AI-native solutions that elevate both the products we bring to market and the way we build them.
As a Staff Applied AI Engineer, you will define strategic AI capabilities, set technical standards, and act as a cross-functional multiplier. You’ll bring deep expertise in applied AI—especially in generative models, orchestration frameworks, and responsible AI practices—to accelerate Komodo’s innovation across internal and external domains.
Looking back on your first 12 months at Komodo Health, you will have accomplished…
- Defined and rolled out company-wide AI patterns, best practices, and standards that guide prompt design, agent orchestration, and responsible AI use.
- Designed and launched reusable AI frameworks that were adopted across multiple teams, enabling faster and safer product innovation.
- Delivered high-impact AI systems that scaled from prototype to production, creating measurable business and healthcare outcomes.
- Acted as a multiplier by mentoring engineers, leading workshops, and unblocking complex AI design challenges.
- Drove build-vs-buy evaluations for core AI platforms, making strategic calls on partnerships, open-source adoption, or internal development.
- Influenced Komodo’s data strategy with an AI-first lens, ensuring model performance, governance, and explainability are embedded into workflows.
These are the essential job duties you will be responsible for …
- Defining and evolving Komodo’s strategic AI capabilities in alignment with business goals and healthcare product needs.
- Designing end-to-end AI solutions, from prototyping through production, with an emphasis on scalability, reliability, and ethical safeguards.
- Partnering across engineering, product, and operations to identify opportunities where AI-native approaches create outsized leverage.
- Driving experimentation with emerging AI toolchains (e.g., Gemini, GPT, Claude, open-source agents), evaluating impact, and guiding adoption.
- Shaping reference architectures and reusable frameworks that accelerate product teams and ensure quality across Komodo’s AI ecosystem.
- Leading cross-functional knowledge sharing through playbooks, workshops, and technical mentorship, raising the bar across teams.
- Ensuring robust observability, governance, and explainability mechanisms for AI features deployed at scale.
What you bring to Komodo Health (required):
- A proven track record of delivering AI systems that transition from research prototypes into scalable, production-ready products.
- Strong technical leadership in generative AI, LLMs, orchestration frameworks, multi-agent systems, and responsible AI practices.
- Fluency in Python and experience with modern GenAI toolchains (e.g., vLLM, Crew AI, Strands, LangChain, Chat Completions API).
- Full-stack engineering proficiency (front-end frameworks like React/Vue; back-end systems like FastAPI, Django, or Flask) with an ability to ship complete AI-powered features.
- Experience setting company-wide standards in AI development, governance, and MLOps (CI/CD for AI, versioning, monitoring).
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills to influence both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or equivalent professional experience with demonstrable impact.
Expectations of AI Use in this role (required):
This role is AI-native by design—you will set the tone for how AI is applied across Komodo.
You are expected to:
- Automate your own workflows and drive adoption of internal AI agent platforms.
- Evaluate and scale cutting-edge models and tools, integrating them into practical solutions across teams.
- Mentor others on prompt engineering, orchestration, and ethical AI practices.
- Ensure explainability, governance, and bias mitigation are embedded into every solution.
- Consistently demonstrate “systems thinking” in how AI workflows connect across Komodo’s ecosystem.
Additional skills and experience we’d prioritize (nice to have)…
- Expertise in healthcare data modalities (claims, EHR, genomic data).
- Experience leading large-scale distributed data and compute systems (e.g., Spark, Databricks, Snowflake).
- Track record of influencing data strategy and architecture in complex domains.
