Job Title: AI Engineer
Company: Tissue Connect Systems
Location: New York City (Remote to In-Person)
Exemption Status: Full-time, Exempt
About Us
Tissue Connect Systems is an emerging leader in AI-driven medical imaging solutions for orthopedic care. Founded by a team of orthopedic spine surgeons and medical students from the Hospital for Special Surgery, the world’s best orthopedic hospital, our mission is to transform patient care by developing quantitative imaging biomarkers to inform treatment approaches for a broad spectrum of musculoskeletal disease and predict associated outcomes. We combine cutting-edge computer vision, medical image analysis, and machine learning to unlock new insights from MRI imaging, one of the most widely obtained modalities of medical imaging, accelerating the translation of novel imaging biomarkers from research into clinical practice.
Our team is passionate about bridging the gap between advanced computational methods and real-world healthcare impact. We work closely with clinical collaborators, surgeons, and research partners to ensure our models meet the highest standards for accuracy, interpretability, and reproducibility.
The Role
We are looking for a highly technical and hands-on AI Engineer to join our growing team and help design, implement, and optimize models for the development of new quantitative imaging biomarkers. You will collaborate with our two technical cofounders, Isaac and Kyle, to push the boundaries of medical AI—turning multimodal imaging data into clinically actionable insights. This role is ideal for a builder who thrives in fast-paced environments and wants to make a tangible impact by bringing real-world AI applications to life.
Responsibilities
- Develop and refine machine learning and deep learning models for medical image analysis in Python.
- Work on preprocessing pipelines, feature extraction, and model evaluation for quantitative imaging biomarkers.
- Contribute to architectural decisions, backend infrastructure, and system optimization.
- Implement and optimize training workflows for large-scale imaging datasets.
- Ensure scalable, secure architecture leveraging Microsoft Azure cloud services.
- Collaborate with clinical and research partners to validate model performance and support regulatory-grade development.
- Work cross-functionally with product, data science, and engineering teams to align AI initiatives with business goals.
- Stay current with the latest advances in machine learning, medical imaging, and AI for healthcare.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- Strong proficiency in Python and ML frameworks, particularly PyTorch.
- Solid understanding of ML algorithms (regression models, tree-based algorithms) and deep learning architectures such as CNNs, RNNs, and transformers, and self-supervised learning approaches.
- Experience with computer vision, 3D image analysis, or medical imaging datasets (DICOM, NIfTI).
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.
- Strong foundation in general software engineering and networking principles.
Preferred Skills
- 3+ years (industry or research) working on deep learning projects
- Experience with quantitative imaging biomarker development or radiomics, but not required—domain knowledge can be learned on the job
- Knowledge of regulatory considerations for medical AI (FDA, CE Mark)
- Background in computer architecture (CUDA, GPU parallelization, compute optimization)
- Familiarity with cloud-based ML pipelines (Azure)
- Experience working in high-growth tech companies or research labs (OpenAI, DeepMind, Google, Anthropic, Meta, Scale AI, Nvidia, PathAI, etc.)
Why Join Us?
At TissueConnect Systems, you’ll be part of a mission-driven team working at the frontier of medical AI. You will have the opportunity to:
- Contribute to technology that could redefine clinical management of musculoskeletal health and diseases.
- Work with a diverse and inclusive multidisciplinary team of engineers and clinicians.
- Grow your skills in a dynamic, fast-moving startup environment.
Location
Remote (U.S.) temporarily, but able to transition to in-person work in New York City in 6-12 months.
Compensation
Highly competitive salary + equity + benefits, commensurate with experience. If you’re excited about our mission, we want to hear from you.
The base salary for this role is $135,000 - 175,000.
Where you land within the range will reflect your skills and experience, while keeping team parity in mind and leaving room for future growth.
How to Apply
If you’re excited to help shape the future of quantitative imaging biomarkers, send your resume, GitHub/portfolio, and a brief introduction to nathooi@tissueconnect.ai (Isaac) and finosk@tissueconnect.ai (Kyle).
