About 1X
We’re an AI and robotics company based in Palo Alto, California, on a mission to build a truly abundant society through general‑purpose robots capable of performing any kind of work autonomously.
We believe that to truly understand the world and grow in intelligence, humanoid robots must live and learn alongside us. That’s why we’re focused on developing friendly home robots designed to integrate seamlessly into everyday life.
We’re looking for curious, driven, and passionate people who want to help shape the future of robotics and AI. If this mission excites you, we’d be thrilled to hear from you and explore how you might contribute to our journey.
ROLE OVERVIEW
You'll disassemble, diagnose, repair, and reassemble intricate humanoid robot components, then collaborate with our engineering teams to translate field failures into design improvements. This is a hands-on, in-person role based in Palo Alto. High performers in this role have the opportunity to advance into mechanical engineering positions.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform precision disassembly and repair of micro-scale mechanical components and assemblies
Rework delicate parts requiring sub-millimeter precision and steady-hand techniques
Diagnose mechanical failures through hands-on inspection and diagnostic tooling (computer interfaces and command-line tools)
Conduct functional testing and validation of repaired components to exacting standards
Collaborate with hardware and design engineers to document failures and inform design iterations
Create detailed technical documentation of repair procedures, tolerances, and assembly sequences
Hands-on experience with precise mechanical work (electronics repair, mechanical assembly, watchmaking, or similar preferred)
Manual dexterity and comfort working with intricate assemblies
Experience with precision hand tools including fine crimping, pinning, and fastening
Proficiency with precision measurement instruments (calipers, micrometers, gauge pins)
Comfortable using computers for diagnostics, ideally with basic terminal/command-line experience
Strong troubleshooting instincts - ability to diagnose issues through observation, touch, and diagnostic tools
High attention to detail and ability to work methodically on complex procedures
Comfortable with physical work including setup, assembly, disassembly, and post-processing
Able to work on-site in Palo Alto full-time
Clear communication and ability to translate hands-on findings into actionable engineering feedback
NICE TO HAVE
Worked on robotics, mechatronics, or general hardware projects
Create and edit CAD models for printing or milling
Basic CAD skills (SolidWorks, Onshape, etc.)
If you know how to troubleshoot and build things quickly, that matters more to us than checking every box.
